# Your first captions

1. Open your sequence in Premiere. Set in and out points if you only want to transcribe a section.
2. Open TCaption's **Transcribe** tab. Choose the audio range and language options, then start transcription.
3. Review the returned transcript. Click a word to start playback there. Double-click text to open the editor; the caption text is selected so you can type immediately. Press Enter to save and continue playback.
4. In **Caption options**, adjust characters per caption and characters per line. The transcript highlights the active caption segment, and a faint vertical bar marks a line break.
5. Choose a video track above your footage. **Insert placeholders** opens a position preview with horizontal and vertical offsets.
6. Open **Style & Tools**, choose a style, adjust its options and apply it to the caption track.

Use a dedicated caption track. If the requested track does not exist, the panel explains this and offers creation when the host supports it.

Play the result in Premiere. The HTML style preview helps with layout; **Render preview** shows the template and effects in Premiere. You can pre-render the sequence after styling for smoother playback.

Export your transcript before major wording or grouping changes. See [Caption options](/docs/reference/caption-options) for how re-grouping handles edits.
