# Insert captions

Use the transcript and [Caption options](/docs/reference/caption-options) to review wording and grouping.

## Video track

Choose a dedicated video track above your footage. If it does not exist, the panel tells you and offers to create the missing tracks when supported. If the target contains overlapping clips, review any replacement prompt carefully.

## Insert placeholders

**Insert placeholders** opens a confirmation with the clip count and a preview. Adjust **Horizontal offset** and **Vertical offset** to position the captions. These values also become the starting position for styled captions.

Placeholders are lightweight captions for editing. Their current word is highlighted without the heavier style effects. They do not receive S_Shake or the sequence pre-render option used during styling.

A caption can contain multiple timeline clips so its active word or line can change with speech. The clip count can therefore be larger than the number of caption segments.

## During and after insertion

Progress shows the current operation. **Stop** ends further placement; already placed clips can remain. Inspect the caption track before restarting an interrupted operation.

Move to [Style & Tools](/docs/steps/style) to apply the design. Reapplying a style after changing grouping rebuilds the styled captions directly, without an intermediate placeholder pass.

**Export** saves your transcript. **Clear** clears panel data for the sequence without removing the caption clips already on the timeline.
